About our Sports Medicine Institute
The mission of the Portneuf Medical Center Sports Medicine Program is to ensure safe participation in sports by providing quality medical care to athletes in Southeastern Idaho. One way we do this is by providing educational programs to prevent, manage, and treat injuries in physically active individuals.
Our team of athletic trainers provide daily care to student-athletes at Century, Highland, Pocatello, and Marsh Valley High Schools throughout the school year. This includes both practice and game coverage. We also provide athletic training services to Idaho State University and its Campus Recreation and Club Sports programs.
At each of our schools, the team of athletic trainers is supported by a comprehensive team of skilled medical providers including physicians, surgeons, physician assistants, and therapists. All onsite services are available and provided to student-athletes free of charge.
In addition to providing comprehensive sports medicine care at local schools, our team is also onsite at a myriad of other community sporting events. Here are a few events we staff:
- Bengal Triathlon
- District 8 High School Rodeo
- Events at Portneuf Wellness Complex
- Gate City Gymnastics
- Gate City Youth Soccer & PVSC Classic
- Idaho High School Rodeo Association Finals
- Parrish 3-on-3 Basketball
- Pocatello Legion Baseball
- Pocatello Marathon
- Pocatello-Chubbuck Lacrosse
- Simplot Games
- Southeast Idaho Youth Football League
Our involvement in local schools and community events underscores our commitment to fostering a safe and healthy environment for Southeast Idaho athletes. By providing comprehensive medical care and educational resources, our Sports Medicine Institute ensures that athletes of all levels receive the support they need to thrive.
Our sports medicine services
While the specialty of sports medicine includes the prevention and treatment of injuries of athletes and physically active people, sports medicine professionals understand that athletes do not always wear uniforms and athletic injuries can happen anywhere— not just on athletic fields. Sports injuries can range from a sprained ankle to more significant injuries like concussions or muscle tears.
No two sports-related injuries are alike. That’s why our orthopedic team is committed to developing customized treatment and rehabilitation programs for your specific sports injury.
Our sports medicine specialists focus on diagnosing, treating, and rehabilitating injuries to the musculoskeletal system caused by athletic activities. The same principles used to return an athlete to the field are also used to return workers back to work, restore function to non-athletes and allow for efficient return to the activities of daily living.
Common injuries which may necessitate sports medicine care include:
- Concussion
- Elbow injury
- Iliotibial (IT) band syndrome
- Injuries and other conditions related to, arising from, or preventing participation in sports or other recreational activities
- Knee injury
- Patella-femoral knee pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- Shoulder injury
- Sports Hernia
- Sprained ankle
- Tennis elbow
- Throwing injury
- Torn ACL
Should you require care for another type of sports injury not listed above, you may be referred to another department, such as orthopedic care. No matter your condition, our sports medicine specialists will ensure you receive exceptional care tailored to your needs so you can get back to doing what you love as soon as possible.
Orthobiologics
Cellular therapy, or orthobiologics, is a branch of translational research in tissue engineering and molecular biology which deals with the process of replacing, engineering, or regenerating human cells, tissues, or organs to restore or establish normal function.
Cellular therapy involves delivery of specific types of cells or cell products to damaged/diseased tissues or organs, where they ultimately restore tissue and organ function. This can be done through cell-based therapy or by using cell products.
Portneuf has the only certified cellular therapy doctor in Idaho and is invested in using the latest non-invasive technologies when medically appropriate. These innovative approaches offer:
- Better ways to heal orthopedic injuries
- Quicker recovery time without surgery
- Replacement tissue for joints, cartilage, and ligaments
