Portneuf Heart and Vascular Institute performs first TriClip placement in Pocatello

Portneuf Heart and Vascular Institute (PHVI) is proud to announce the successful completion of Portneuf Medical Center’s first TriClip procedure, marking a significant milestone for cardiac care in Pocatello. In this minimally invasive procedure, the TriClip is a device used to repair the tricuspid valve, helping the heart pump more efficiently and improving the quality of life for patients with tricuspid regurgitation (TR).

“This milestone underscores our team’s innovation, collaboration and unwavering commitment to improving patient outcomes,” said Jacob DeLaRosa, MD, Chief of Cardiac Surgery. “Bringing this cutting-edge technology to our community ensures patients have access to world-class care close to home.”

TR occurs when the heart’s tricuspid valve doesn’t close properly, which allows blood to flow backward through the valve and into the heart. During the procedure, an interventional cardiologist inserts a catheter in the groin and guides the clip toward the tricuspid valve. The clip attaches to the tricuspid leaflets and brings them together, reducing the backflow of blood. Once in position, the clip is released from the catheter. The clip will remain in place for the rest of the patient’s life.

The TriClip procedure is an alternative to open heart surgery. While still an effective method for repairing TR, open heart surgery poses significant risks for patients who are older, have tricuspid-related issues, and/or have other medical conditions. Without treatment, patients can experience a reduction in quality of life.

“This accomplishment was made possible through the combined efforts of our dedicated coordinator, cardiologists, surgical team, cardiovascular leadership and the entire support staff,” said Dr. DeLaRosa. “Their expertise and teamwork reflect Portneuf’s mission to lead with excellence in patient-centered heart care.”

Common symptoms for TR include extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, pulsing neck veins, and swelling of the abdomen or legs. Risk factors for TR include atrial fibrillation, congenital heart defect, heart attack, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, infections of the heart or heart valves, and others.  The TriClip procedure is recommended for patients with moderate to severe TR who are not candidates for open heart surgery. PHVI is proud to be at the forefront of heart care technology and provide hope for those suffering from challenging or complex heart conditions.
